- -- Wally Byam, describing the origin of the name Airstream
1930s Airstream Trailers - Pre-World War II
Wally Byam began building trailers for friends and neighbors in the 1930s. Byam opened his first factory in Culver City, CA in 1931, building trailers for sale to the public. These first trailers were wood and canvas kits.
In 1936 Byam built his first all aluminum, monocoque trailer named the Clipper – a reference to the Pan Am Clipper. McFaul Bros. were the exclusive distributor of Airstreams until 1948.

During 1947-1948 Airstream Trailers, Inc. produced seven Liners – Chinook, Tradewind, Westwind, Zephyr, Sea Breeze, and Wee Wind. In 1948 Byam declares Airstream Trailers, Inc. open for business.
